Wrinkle Injections and Dermal Fillers in Sydney, New South Wales

The effects of time, gravity, and stress are often first noticed on the face. The delicate facial skin is especially prone to lines, wrinkles, and other problems. Designed to relax the muscles of the face, the wrinkle injections administered at our Sydney-based cosmetic surgery practice by Dr. Darrell Perkins may help improve the appearance of facial wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes. For lines around the mouth, such as marionette lines and creases that extend from the nose to the corners of the mouth, we offer a number of dermal fillers. At our New South Wales practice, dermal fillers may also be used to enhance pouting of the lips. Many patients choose to combine wrinkle injections and dermal fillers with other skin treatments, such as chemical peels, to maximize the rejuvenation of the skin.

Wrinkle Injections

Wrinkle injections, which are offered at our Sydney plastic surgery practice, contain a chemical that relaxes the specific muscles of the face that cause the formation of frown lines, crow’s feet, and other wrinkles.

A very fine needle is used to administer wrinkle injections to select muscles of the face. As these muscles become immobilized, the facial skin begins to smooth and fine lines and wrinkles start to soften. A treatment typically takes 30 minutes. It may take four to seven days, however, for the full results of the wrinkle injections to become apparent.

When performed by a trained medical practitioner who has excellent knowledge of the anatomy of the face, wrinkle injections involve little risk. If the wrinkle injections are improperly placed near the eye area, it is possible for a eyelid to droop as a result. As the effects of the wrinkle injections are impermanent, however, any ill effects should subside in a matter of weeks. Some patients may also experience temporary bruising as a side effect of the injections.

Although they may help to diminish fine lines and wrinkles, wrinkle injections do not address sagging skin. Patients of our Sydney-based practice who have loose skin on the face and neck may experience more dramatic facial rejuvenation with a facelift.

Dermal Fillers

Similar to wrinkle injections, dermal fillers are offered at our practice in Sydney, New South Wales to rejuvenate the appearance of our patients. Unlike wrinkle injections, however, dermal fillers improve the appearance of facial skin by filling in wrinkles and adding definition to the contours of the face, including those of the lips and cheeks.

During a comprehensive consultation for each patient considering dermal fillers, an evaluation of  the patient's skin and underlying facial structure is undertaken to determine what type of dermal fillers may be most appropriate.

After a treatment plan has been decided upon, the patient's skin is gently cleansed and an icy pole or local anaesthetic is applied to numb the skin. This ensures that the patient is as comfortable as possible during the procedure and that any temporary bruising or swelling that may occur is minimized. The doctor or nurse then uses a very fine needle to administer the dermal filler to the areas to be treated.

Many of our patients notice immediate results. With some dermal fillers, however, results may become more noticeable over time. Since the body eventually reabsorbs the ingredients in the biocompatible dermal fillers that we use at our New South Wales cosmetic surgery practice, "top-ups" may be required every four to 18 months in order to maintain optimal results, depending on the filler used.

Fat Grafting

Fat grafting can reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles, frown lines, and sunken cheeks for a more youthful look. In this procedure, excess fat from the patient's own body, often from the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks, is injected into targeted areas to smooth lines and wrinkles, add volume, and improve facial contours. As a result, patients can enjoy the body contouring benefits of liposuction in addition to receiving facial rejuvenation treatment.

Because only natural substances are injected, fat grafting is very safe and its results are long lasting. For more information about how the procedure can restore smooth, youthful-looking contours to the cheeks, chin, and under eye regions, please contact our practice today.
